Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical family on August 9, 1963, in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and the cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. Whitney's mother and her started singing professionally in the church of New Hope Baptist in Newark in the year Whitney was just 15 years old. They performed backing vocals on Chaka Kans' hit song from 1978 Im Every Woman. In the year 1981, she was a model and appeared on the Seventeen Cover. She also performed back vocals for Jermaine and Lou Rawls. In 1983 in 1983, Material, the New York City funk-rock band Material hired her as their featured singer. Their quality was the reason she was enthused to join major record label Arista. Her debut album Whitney Houston was released in 1985 and became the biggest-selling album of an artist who was a rookie. Several hit singles including the hit songs Saving All My Love For You How Do I know You Give Good Love and The Greatest Love of All were released from the album, setting her up for a Beatles-beating seven consecutive US numbers one. The album was released in 1987 and has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. The follow-up album released in 1987 Whitney which included the hits The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built upon her successes, but it was her 1992 movie The Bodyguard (1992) that established her as one of the best-selling artists in history. While the movie itself and her performance in it were not highly reviewed, the soundtrack album as well as her rendition of Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You topped the album and single charts for several months, and she sold over 44 million copies all over the globe. In the same year, she got married to ex-New Edition star Bobby Brown with whom she has a single daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, born in March 1993. The beginning of her addiction to drugs came around this time and, in 1996, she'd been a frequent user.
